Widgets and other confusing things….

January 21st, 2008

What are widgets, rss, css and how do I put a pic into a comment left for someone else?  I am very new to blogs, other than reading and leaving an occasional comment.  Anyone who can help me, would be very appreciated.

    Hi, Mom!

    RSS is a web feed. You get up-to-the-minute information from sites when they are updated. Meetup offers this so that users know when people have posted to the message board and such, but I just use the mailing list feature (the “old-fashioned” way).

    Here’s more information on it (full disclosure: I haven’t read it myself): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)

    Also from Wikipedia:
    Web widget: a third party item that can be embedded in a web page.

    Personally, I do not know how to make one for others to use, but I have used them before. Try iGoogle. It’s basically just a page of widgets that you can customize with these:

    Hmmm… putting a picture in. Are you talking about the little box that is supposed to be a representation of the writer? I see mine is blank (probably because I don’t have an account with WordPress). I was trying to blog with Google’s service (Blogger), but I just don’t have the time. Mostly, my version of blogging is on meetup.

    Perhaps you’re talking about embedding a picture in text like this. I don’t even know how to get a smiley in here. Ask Nicole what she did for the post about Ruskie.

    In this context (computing/blogging) CSS is probably:

    * Cascading Style Sheets, a language useful in describing the style of document presentations
    * Closed source software
    * Cross-site scripting, although XSS is now preferred.

    But I’m not sure where you saw it. You don’t need to know it. Just keep your entries organized the best you can.

    Amy, the pic that is suppose to represent the writer is called an avatar. I think you could not see the pic of Ruskie (that I posted not Nicole) is because I deleted it accidently. I have reposted the pic and it should be there now. Thanks for all of the info and for posting your hello… love you lots
