New Family Member

January 15th, 2009

Today we had a family addition….. no, not the kind that V and T are doing with the stretch marks and throwing up! All I had to do was drive about an hour to get her. She is only 6 weeks old. Her mother quit feeding her and the owner had to bottle feed all nine in the litter. She has been to the vet and got the ok to find her new permanent family…..

TA DA! Meet Belle, our new American Staffordshire Terrier -- AKA pitbull

She slept in my lap all the way home. I put her in the carrier that I had brought but she wanted nothing to do with it! I hope that she likes it better tonight! I don’t want to leave her unattended at night…. the cats may eat her!

I think an “Awwwwwwww” is required here.

Thanks for your well wishes on the townhouse, and yes, I will keep you posted! If this place comes through, we are getting a dog! I know, I know, I am not a great candidate for pet owner of the year, but, my partner is. He had a cat for 18 years… and sadly lost her 2 years ago. He said he couldn’t handle it to lose a pet again, but now the talk of a dog has become a frequent topic of conversation. I must say, because of this post you have, my heart has melted alot towards relenting. I would never deny anyone from owning a pet, but have always been leery in case I become sole pet looker-after, but…. oh well, who am I to deny someone from having a best bud? He has always wanted a golden lab, so we will see. I think it might be a bigger dog than what would be appropriate for the size of our potential home/yard, but I am going to do some research and see. I may be back to check on your thoughts on the subject, but at this point, until we are actually set in stone for the move, it is all just conversation.
By the way, how is your newest family member doing?

I function with these dogs and as far as animal behavior goes, I’m a solid believer in nurture and instruction. I have met Jack Russell Terriers that I wouldn’t go in close proximity to again, but have by no means had a awful experience with an American Staffordshire Terrier. If you’re talking about their owners- well, that’s a distinct story. People are creatures as well, and we tend to every have our own ideas about “moral concepts”.
